Two years later, Kuckie is a svelte and chiseled version of his former self, and the couple's venture into the health and wellness industry has been been nothing short of a roaring success. The Kuckies' Spa Remedy has earned accolades from one publication for its massage, facial and botox services, and another has called it “One of Illinois' best day spas.”
Jim and Maggie on Oct. 19 cut the ribbon to mark the ceremonial opening of their Spa Remedy location, in the Amici Spa & Salon building at 9029 W. Lincoln Highway in Frankfort, and they plan to open a fourth in Tinley Park. The spa specializes in massage and skin care, and according to Kuckie employ some of the most advanced, non-surgical skin care techniques including bio-facelift, microcurrent and galvanic treatments, in addition to services such as microderm abrasion and chemical peels.
“If it can make you look younger and make your skin healthier we want to be a part of it,” he said.
Spa Remedy also offers steam detoxification and aroma therapy, and employs reiki professionals and licensed aestheticians; but the Kuckies are interested in doing more for their clients than helping them have beautiful, healthy skin. Maggie is an experienced massage therapist and a nurse who has managed an operating room, and Jim's interest in health and wellness was fostered by his wife's passion the field and his own struggle with being overweight. The couple wants to encourage their clients to make the kinds of positive lifestyle changes Jim made two years ago, so that they can live healthier, happier lives.
“We see a lot of people that are going into the health care system, which is broken, and we want to try and be very proactive with that; so although we're great with massages and facials, health and wellness is really what we pride ourselves on,” Kuckie said.
Spa remedy has partnered with a naturopathic doctor that works at all three locations, and has also hooked up with two nutritionists who will soon be working with the company. Kuckie explained how better nutrition and naturopathic medicine can team with spa techniques such as body sculpting to help people achieve remarkable results.
“After 12 sessions of [body sculpting] we can get the equivalent inch-loss out of people with this as you could with liposuction,” he added. “Lifestyle changes can enhance those results. It's something people need.”
Something else clients may need is what Jim referred to as the “decompression room,” a quiet, softly-lit space where they can slip into something more comfortable before their spa services begin.
“For our clients with a busy lifestyle, it's hard for people to take time for themselves, so we try to force it, in a sense,” Kuckie said. “When you walk behind the Spa Remedy door its a little different tone and feel … kind of away from everything. We encourage them not to bring their cell phones, and to get in robes and slippers and relax.”
